Where does this phrase come from??

WHo saids it and what does it mean? A stitch in time saves nine

  1. It means to fix the problem while it is still small. It is a very old proverb--I can't find information on the originator. (if you have a small hole in your shirt and fix it with one stitch, it will save you from having to put nine stitches later)
  2. I don't know who exactly said it but, basically, the proverb means deal with your problem when it first starts rather than waiting for it to get bigger. So if you deal with things as they start you will save time later. Like if a hem starts to unravel if you deal with it on the first stitch it will save you nine if you wait till it completely unravels. Does that make sense? lol Hope it helped :)
