What does the phrase " A stitch in time saves nine " mean?

1. I think it means being efficient can pay off many times over!
2. Take care of problems while they are small, or they turn into big problems.
3. in time=in the future. It means to set something up for the future and you will save yourself time in the future.
4. If you do it now instead of later it'll pay off! If you wait... you usually get annoyed or just fuck it up. So yeah ... do whatever it is now and get it done and over with! :)
