Stitches

what is the rule of thumb in choosing what fabric color to use for a particular cross stitch design?

I have some left over Aida cloth and I want to do another design which calls for a different color. What should I do?

  1. if your cloth is white or ivory or cream then it wont matter at all. black cloth goes with certain designs and same for the other colour cloth. its a pain but you can always cross stitch the background to what colour you need it. good luck. i love cross stitching. whats your design and what colour cloth do you have?
  2. How do the colours for the second design go with the Aida cloth? (Try laying out the hanks of thread against the cloth.) If it all looks good, go for it. If not, perhaps you want to look at making the second design in the colours you used for the first design, or some of the colours you used for the first design. In the end, it's all a matter of individual taste.
  3. It depends on the design and the predominant colours in the design. For example if I have something that calls for a lot of metallic thread I might choose a darker coloured Aida so it will stand out more. If there are a lot of pastel/soft colours I might go for a white or cream.. It will also depend on who I am doing the cross-stitch for and where it will eventually end up, I try and take colour schemes of rooms in mind too.
