- I suggest beginning with the following top-site list: http://artofstitching.top-site-list.com/ each company/designer has at least four (4!) free patterns available. Some of them are scenery pictures, some are portraits, some are simpler items. This is not the same as the host company. Going to http://www.artofstitching.com and click on "free patterns" and you'll go to a collection of "mini" fine art adaptations. I enjoy the mini's, but the only scenery freebie might not have as much detail as desired. Mucha is the current feature there.
- Internet freebies are usually very simple and small, not scenery pictures. I suggest you learn to make your own patterns. It is easiest with a computer graphic program - it turns ANY picture into "pixels". I used to do mine by copying the pictures on a graph paper with 1 millimeter squares (0.04 inches) You can also transfer the image on the canvas.
- If you're really into cross stiching you might try joining a yahoo group that focuses just on this hobby. Lots of members in the groups create their own designs to share, have excellent links and resources to find free and very inexpensive patterns. Plus you'll find a TON of blogs, swaps and maybe some floss colors that you need but they don't make anymore. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=Cross+Stitch I belong to several different knitting groups and I'm never at loss for a new project or someone to show off my knitting too!
- try www.anniesattic.com
- It's pretty easy to buy cross stitch books, either at a new book shop or a second hand shop. If you don't want to pay, check your local library. I've nearly finished one I scanned out of a library book.
- Try Rick's Charts-- http://www.rickscharts.com/ Join his Yahoo group and he has an archive of free charts to download. He also sends one via e mail every month. He has the most free scenery that I've found. DMC has a nice selection of freebies-- http://www.dmc-usa.com/majic/pageServer/0d01000005/en_US/Home.html There are a lot of patterns available, and more if you join. EMS Design is a favorite of mine, although she specializes in flowers and children, not landscapes. http://www.maurer-stroh.com/index.html Again, to get the freebies you'll need to join. There is also an active forum, and DMC has one, too. The last one, Artecy, offers two free designs every two weeks, often nice landscapes and art reproductions. If you don't get them during the two weeks you'll have to pay, but everything on her site is inexpensive. http://www.artecy.com/free.html Good luck!
