There are lots of site that will give you free patterns, just warm up your Google and take it for a spin. But the free patterns are going to generally be just the little simpleton patterns. Nothing with any challenge or complexity. For the good stuff you got to spend a little.
Check out http://www.artofstitching.com for more difficult patterns. The four free patterns change every month. These are based on famous paintings. I just finished a four page freebie pattern of "Mona Lisa." You should check this site out if you want a more difficult pattern. Another place to check out is http://www.freewebs.com/ricksxstitch/ You will have to sign up for his free Yahoo! group but this is easily done. Some the free patterns that he has available range from beginner to expert. The easy patterns are easy to find. Just type in "free cross stitch patterns" into the Yahoo searchbar and viola!
