How were the cross stitch patterns made before the pc cross stitch programs came out?

- on graph paper...
- They used to have stamped cross stitch fabric. I don't think patterns from a long time ago were the same as they are now.
- Some people used paper and pencil to make patterns, either with graph paper, or simply a plain sheet of paper. For instance, making a line drawing of what they want, and then putting x's on it. Some people just take the fabric and draw the picture they want lightly on the fabric, then place the x's where ever they go best. I have seen cross-stitch artists who just create the picture as they stitch, directly onto the fabric.

- People mapped out their patterns using graph paper and pencil crayons. It was tedious work but resulted in maticulous designs. They often already had their embroidery floss at hand so knew exactly how to colour match. Some designers still prefer to create their designs this way.
- We had leaflets that were free from the dimestore. Or take graph paper and draw up a nice pattern. I made a stage coach with 4 horses for a valance on my kitchen door.
