How easy is it to use a hand held stitching machine if you are a total novice? Any tips?

1. It is not easy to do it alone. If you have someone else to handle the fabric it will not be so complicated. The stitcher worked fine for me, but with only one free hand to manipulate the fabric, it was very frustrating trying to end up with a good looking result. Practice on a simple, straight edge. The first time, I hemmed the frayed edge of a sheet, and that came out fine.
