To pay or not to pay? What should I have done?

My friend and I crochet afghans for a local children's hospital, and we're always looking for free or cheap yarn. I found a woman trying to get rid of some on Craigslist, and I e-mailed her, asking her if she'd donate it to us, or if not, we'd pay a token amount of $5 for it. She e-mailed me back, saying "I actually have donated quite a bit there. My daughter was in. I guess that would be fine." I took that to mean that she would donate the yarn, so I went to pick it up yesterday, and she just gave it to me. Now today, when I checked my e-mail she said "I thought we agreed to $5." I e-mailed her back saying that I thought she agreed to donate it, and I quoted her e-mail, saying she never specifically said "I'll give it to you for $5". I told her I must have misunderstood, and I would send her a check for the $5. She e-mailed back saying "That's not my point. Never mind." I e-mailed her back saying I have her address, I'll send her a check. Was I right to do that? Do I owe?

  1. Some people are just "funny" strange. I would have mailed the $5, for my benefit, not hers.
  2. I think it was an honest misunderstanding and even though you might not "owe" you'll sleep better if you mail her the five bucks.
  3. If thats not her point, what the heck was? She sounds like an idiot. Just send her the precious $5 and forget it, thats what I'd do.
  4. Yes, send her 5.00 and a nice thank-you note. If that don't please her Nothing will. When it comes to the "AL-MIGHTY DOLLAR, everyone could use it.
  5. Send her the money with a nice Thank You--and later send her a picture of the afghan you donated, with another thank you for your help!
