Stitches

Some crochet questions?

What does a crochet needle look like? I'm not talking about the hook, I'm talking about the thing you use to weave in ends. I have looked for a picture every where, but I can't find one, and I'm planning on buying one today and want to know what it looks like. Also, if I am making a big project like an afgahn, is it better to use a big crochet hook? Will this get it done faster? Sorry for my novice questions, but any help you can give me is appreciated! Thank you! :)

  1. um no the bigger the hook has nothing to do with it unless theof ur string.check walmart in the arts and craft center. there will be books, string, and needles. i hope that washelpfule enough.
  2. You use a yarn or tapestry needle to weave in ends. They just look like really big needles. I usually buy the plastic ones from Boye, because I can never keep up with them. If you want to make an afghan, using a big hook will make the project go faster, but make sure you use a bulky or super bulky weight yarn to go with it, otherwise you will end up with odd looking stitches. You can also use two strands of yarn together to bulk up your yarn. There are pattern books available specifically for making afghans with huge hooks and yarn that go quick and look great--you should be able to find one at walmart or joanns (or any other craft store that sells yarn).
  3. i use a tapestry needle to sew in my end when I crochet. The eye of the needle is big enough to fit the yarn through. As for the big hook there is big hooks out there for crocheting it just depends how chunky you want your afghan to be.
  4. When you go to the store, look for/ask for a knitter's needle; they use the same fibres as people who crochet. If the you can't find one or the store owner doesn't understand and tries to give you a knittING needle, ask for a tapestry needle instead!
  5. When you turn your material and start on the next row you should not have to weave the ends unless you are cutting the thread. If you are making an afghan they have afghan hooks. The hooks come in different sizes but the "handle" is somewhere between 10" and 12". I have one here but I don't have it handy so I am just guessing on the handle. A big crochet hook does not make the difference. One would be how much practice you have had but with the larger hook you will find that you may have open spots that you would not have with a smaller hook. Best suggestion on that would be for you to try both small and large hook and see what you get.
  6. Its a really large looking needle but has a big eye opening so you can put your yarn through it for hiding teh ends.
