What is the best sewing machine out there for a newbie?
I don't want a toy; i actually do want something i can learn and grow with, but i also know i will never be a full-fledged seamtress. i will not make clothing from scratch or anything. i would like something that i can make children's costumes with, fix holes/tears in clothes, stitch buttonholes, etc. any ideas?

- brother, they're kinda expensive but worth it
- Buy a used Singer. Look on Craig's List for one.
- My first choice is Singer been around a century.Next and cheapest and will do for your needs Brother.Easy to operate has features and under $150.WalMart is cheapest, unless you have a great Discount store.
- The best thing for you is any brand of good used machine. Either try a thrift store or a sewing repair,or sales place. I have seen REALLY good mchines at St. Vincents for under $30.00. They may need a tune up, but are usually worth much more. Learn on a used machine, and then decide what specific brand and features you want to have in your "permanent" machine
