How can I crochet with yarn instead of cotton thread?

- It's the same, you just use a bigger hook. Most patterns tell you what size hook to use.
- buy yarn instead of cotton thread. DONE!
- If you are using the same pattern, and it is for a doily type article, you just use the right crochet needle for the yarn you purchase. The information is on the side of the yarn label.. If the item you are making is a sweater, you need to recalculate the information to make it the right size to fit. You crochet a 4 x 4 square, measure it, and figure out the difference in stitch numbers compared to the gauge of your original pattern. Then you need to go through the pattern and rewrite it with your gauge calculations. It is complicated! I used a thread doily pattern and cotton yarn to make some lovely placemats, and they went pretty fast, and look great.
- Use a larger hook. The principles are exactly the same.
- It's really different, so be patient with yourself. You will need to get a larger hook instead of the steel hook you've probably been using. That kind of hook is numbered (1,2,3 etc) while yarn hooks have letters (G, H, I). The higher in the alphabet, thhe larger the hook and the thicker the yarn you would use. This is the opposite of your thread hooks, where higher numbers produce finer fabric. Have fun with it!! It goes MUCH faster than what you're used to.....
- it really dosn't matter what size hook you use. juse buy yarn instead of cotton thread
- You will need to get some aluminum crochet hooks and a good size yarn to start working with (if you have never worked with yarn before), is a standard worsted weight yarn. Red Heart is a good yarn to try or the Caron yarns. For a beginner with yarn, I would stay away from all the fancy yarns on the shelves lately (fuzzy, bulky, eyelash, etc). These fancy textured yarns make your stitches very hard to see. Try also a size G or and H hook to start off with and good luck.
