what size (mm) hook do you normally use with size 3 crochet thread?
I have a pattern that calls for size 10, is it okay to use size 3 instead? Can patterns use substitutions if you change the hook size to correspond?

- There really isn't a "normal" size hook to use with it. I have seen different patterns that call for many different sizes of hooks with size 3 crochet thread. If you subsitute a different thread and hook size, whatever you're crocheting will end up a different size than the original pattern, so be sure to take that into account.
- If I remember right, size 3 thread is smaller than size 10. So, you should use a larger numbered needle such as 11 ,as it is a smaller needle. Which will result in a smaller sized doily. Check this page for a needle chart for threads. http://crochet.about.com/library/blthreadhook.htm Hope this helps you out.
- I am not 100% sure about that. Depends on patterns, as well as what feels comfortable for you. I generally use a 6 hook for size 10 thread.
- I have used a G and a H hook with no. 3 size.
