  1. Look for things like a cellphone case, a waterbottle holder, purse, or even a hat. Some hats are pretty simple. Go have a look at www.lionbrand.com and www.coatsandclark.com for free patterns. Both are yarn manufacturers; they give out free patterns so people will crochet and knit more, and buy more yarn. They do not require any purchase to let you use their websites and patterns, however.
  2. Wal-Mart has a kit with instruction book and crochet hooks called "I taught myself to crochet". The book has lessons to learn to crochet and also some nice beginner patterns.
  3. The best way to start is to familiarize yourself with the terminology and stitches. The main stitches are your chain, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, slip stitch. A person should begin with a large yarn and hook. This will make the crocheting easier to hold and performs well. I would suggest a hat, a pot holder, the granny square, as good beginner projects. This is a good website to get information www.Houses of White Birches.com. Good Luck!
  4. For pre-teens and teens there is a great book called I Can Crochet. It says preteens on the cover - I don't know if teens would take offense but the projects are shoelaces, scrunchie, friendship bracelet, scarf, purse, granny square vest, afghan, hat, and a daisy flower to attch to hat. The leaflet is published by Annie's Attic and is #872551. I've used this book for all age groups. I personally like to use children's books as they are usually simple to understand.
