needlework? how to start a new project and the tools and supplies needed
What is your favourite advanced needlework stitch? I am working on some new needlework designs and am interested in making use of some advanced counted-thread stitches. Some of the designs are on canvas, others are on evenweave, and one is on linen. I would really appreciate hearing from avid stitchers - what is your favourite complex stitch (or combination of stitches)? References would really help! By counted thread stitches I mean such things a Gobelin stitch, Rhodes Stitch, Needleweaving, things like that. These stitches can be used in embroidery, samplers, canvaswork, counted thread, etc. The ANG has some GREAT stitches online, I'm just trying to get an idea for new compilations that people actually like! Thanks.
How can I clean a framed needlework? I have a framed crewel needlework that my mother stitched for me years ago. It is dark from dust, grime, and natural gas heat. I want to get it cleaned, but I don't know where to take it. I'm assuming it will have to come out of the frame, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions, please?
what different techniques do you use to stop fraying while needlework? I mainly use clear nail polish (something my mother showed me) but it is not working. I bought a bottle can't remeber the name of it that looks like a nail polish bottle that I bought at a craft store and that isn't working very good either. What techniques do you use. i was thinking about pulling out my sewing machine and bate stitching the edges has anyone tried that and does it work
Where to find a hobby shop for needlework? I used to do embroidery and now I'm interested in taking it up again and just making random things to decorate my apartment with. Where can I find a hobby shop to buy supplies and get ideas from? I live in Orange County, CA, and doing a Google search hasn't really helped. Walmart and Target doing carry these supplies either. Help :)
Are knitting, cross stitch, crochet and similar needlework forgotten? I was just wondering how many people are still doing any of them. Especially younger generations. Personally I love crochet and I am doing it since I was 10,11. It relaxes me and I always have some ready for those people that I realy appreciate and want to give a special present. I'm a mother,wife,3rd level student, have friends but I always find time to do it(usually when watching TV).

Name 5 characters and note how they embody pride and/or prejudice What is the greatest moment of discomfort for Elizabeth Bennet, Mr. Darcy, Mr. Bennet, and Mrs. Bennet? Anyone into needlework patterns or who uses the Internet sources? Need karate positions - funny and for children preferred but I can modify. Know of any pamphlets, books (knitting, counted cross stitch, plastic canvas, etc.)? I would need the name, pamphlet/book # and address of company. I checked the Internet, but found almost nothing in the sports areas. Maybe I overlooked something. My thanks to anyone's suggestions.
I am looking to purchase small gold-tone plastic needlework frames.? I have looked everywhere on the internet. They possibly are out of style. I have a cross stitch book that has completed projects with this type of frame(American School of Needlework's 365 Tiny Cross Stitch Designs). However, the business where I could purchase them that is indicated in the back of the book does not seem to carry them (Yarn Tree). Does anyone know where I could purchase these frames in a variety of shapes (at least round, oval, square and rectangle)?
Does anyone know where I can find a "free" needlework? of the Marine Corps Emblem. My Grand-daughter is marrying a "once a marine, always a Marine". I have searched and from what I have gone through cannot find one although they advertise as "free". I am on a very limited income and would like to find a free one or could someone who has it e-mail me the instructions and the threads needed. I would be very grateful for information to find it and download or if someone could send one to me.
Have you taught your girls to do needlework? My niece just sent me three pretty hankies on which she hand embroidered my initials and some tiny flowers. I am so proud of her and pleased that her mother and I spent time when she was a little girl, teaching her needlework, just as our mother and grandmothers did for us. Are you passing those skills down to your girls?
Best Lighting for Needlework? I'm an avid cross stitcher and was wondering what the best lighting is. I need a very bright, close light to distinguish between similar colors. Thanks!

Wanted: Free Needlework Etui pattern? I'm looking for a free pattern of how to make a Needlework Etui, preferably an octagonal one. An Etui is a small box and once the lid is removed the sides of the box fall away like a flower. Used to hold needlework accessories, like pins, scissors etc.
How do you start your own clothes label? I often dream of opening my own fashion boutique, I love drawing clothing, and designing items of clothing. I havent got no degree in art, neither any needlework skills.. So is it still possible to start my own label? And how would i go about doing it?
What is a good way to get melted cheese off of a delicate, fancy quilt? I often use my blankets and such to wipe up massive food spills. The other day I microwaved some cheese, but I heated it up so much that it was more of a liquid than solid. The plate was very hot from being overheated; so, I dropped it when I picked it up, and it spilled. I used my quilt which my mother sewed for me to wipe up this spill. My mother made the quilt for me a few years ago, but I am worried that the cheese stain will not come out so well because cheese is somewhat oily; are there are any good detergents, suggestions, or such to get this stain out? I can't use anything which would harm the delicate fabric or the detailed needlework.
How can a person unlock their creativity? I always feel like i have a "book" in me, but when I try to sit down and write my mind goes blank! I cant help thinking everything I write is utter crap. Also I want to be better at needlework and stuff like that but I'm so clumsy! How do I just get better at creative/artistic stuff?
What sewing machine to buy for hemming pants? I just want to buy a simple basic sewing machine under $100 to hem my pants. I don't need it to do any fancy needlework. All I need is to hem my pant legs. Can anyone recommend me any brands? Thanks alot!
McCalls Needlework & Crafts magazine, circa 1970s? I'm looking for a crochet pattern for a triangular shawl that was published in McCall's some time between the late 1960s to the 1970s. It was a quadruple crochet pattern that produced a very web-like and lacy pattern, and had a fringe about a foot long on two sides. Can anyone help?
Please specify a method for die-cutting thread bobbins at home? I like the antique styles. I'd like to use my own printed cardstock. I've not been able to find any suitable dies for/from the systems at crafts stores. I have an old 13-lobed Star [brand] thread card on hand and pictures of other styles in antique needlework magazines. I'm wondering if I asked in the wrong category. I do want a home-method, rather than industrial that costs more than a used car, or to learn that that's the only alternative.
Why do I always get cold hands when on the PC or when doing needlework etc? My hands always seem to end up frozen every time I am using my hands for something like typing on the PC or doing cross-stitch or model painting etc, even cooking sometimes. It leaves me with a lot of pain in my hands as they feel like blocks of ice. I've tried the fingerless gloves but they don't help either :S Any ideas would be gratefully received
Is it important for girls to learn basics of cooking and sewing? When i was a kid in school, i had to take cookery and sewing lessons ... or called home science. That taught us basics of cooking and needlework. We also learned how to do laundry the correct way. Unfortunately, they are not teaching that in schools. Do you think that it is important for girls to learn these basics??
Are there others who would like a catagory just for needlework crafts such as sewing, crochetiing, etc.? I find it very hard to find a catagory for these items, they seem lost in a jungle of other Hobbies & Crafts. Seems a listing for Crafts and then subtitles for either needlework, scrapbooking, etc. under that, would make it much easier to find a subject to list those questions under. I meant first catagory to be Crafts, and under this - sub-catagories listing Sewing, Needlework, Scrapbooking, etc.,They would still be together in the same area, but you could click on whichever one of interest to you, and not have to weed through all the other questions.
Why are people not joining embroidery guilds in the USA? We have lost members over the years and are down to about 12 when we once had about 90 members. Are people just too busy? Is there a trend away from needlework, handwork, embroidery? I know knitting has become popular in some places. Is it just a cycle or sign of the times? Kids seem to enjoy tactile arts (knit, crochet, cross-stitch), but don't seem to be looking for places that teach it.
What are the best needlwork/yarn shops in NYC? I'm going to be visiting NYC in mid December and want to check out some cool yarn shops or needlework shops, fabric stores or craft shops would be OK too. I'm staying in Mid-town. Any suggestions? I hate going home and finding out that I was 2 blocks from the coolest store! Thanks for any advice you've got!
Is there a printer that uses iron transfer ink? I want a printer that uses iron on transfer ink so that when I make a design I can print it out and iron it on to what ever I want. If there is not one why not.?. The paper leaves a plastic coating that gets in the way of needlework. You can buy small books that print iron on paterns and you should be able to do it in your own place. Are we being prevented because the book producers are afraid to loose business. And I can't find books with just the right design. Seems to me if I could just buy the transfer ink I could make my own.
Ladies, did you enjoy cookery and needlework at school or would you rather have .....? ...... been in the tech block with the boys doing wood/metal work? My mother taught me more about cooking than any of the teachers did, infact I got wrong off them for comparing them unfavourably with Mam. I would much rather have been in the tech block but girls weren't allowed to do such things (perhaps in the sixth form ... We had one sixth form lad who took cookery ... he was laughed at and called gay. I hope he's a top chef now.)
