Knitting Stitches Knowledge Base
knitting stitches? I'm going to knit a throw (small blanket) and I'm looking for a unique stitch to use; something not too difficult, but more interesting than ribbing or stockinette. I was thinking about this one: http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/daisy.htm but I'm still not sure. Does anyone have any other recommendations?
What are some good websites that teach you different stitches in knitting? I'm a beginner in knitting, and I would like to learn how to do different styles of stitch besides the stockinette stitch and the knit stitch while making a scarf. A website that tells you how to do it would be greatly appreciated, especially if that site offers training videos! Best answer gets 10 points! =)
What are all the stitches used in knitting? What are all the different stitches called that someone needs to learn to successfully knit. I'm a beginner and right now just know the basic knit stitch. What else is there for me to learn and what should I move onto next?
How can I make my knitting stitches taller? I am trying to knit a swatch that's 24 st x 32 rows to get 10cm x10cm. I've got the width right, but not the height. It's only 8cm tall. I could add a few rows, of course, but what can I do to fix the size of the stitches? Thanks! the_emrod: But when I do that, my stitches becomes too wide.
Are there any websites or books that can teach me different knitting stitches? I am looking for ways to teach myself how to do different types of knitting (my alternative plan is to go to a knitting "group" or something similar but figured I'd try this way first.) I can do a basic stitch and think I can remember how to do purl. I would also like to learn how to crochet, is this easy enough to teach myself or would it be better to have someone teach me how to do it? I pick things up pretty easily Thanks :)
why did my stitches double while knitting a scarf? my scarf has doubled in width and i haven't added any stitches, but i started out with seventeen and now have about double that. i haven't done anything except knit with a knit stitch - nothing fancy at all. i've used the same needles the whole time and the stitches are the same in tightness. i can't figure it out - this happens on almost everything i knit. it stays the same width for awhile and then one side starts to flare outward, while the other stays straight. help!
I am knitting an afghan on a 5mm circular needle, how many stitches should I cast on? Hi, I'm knitting an afghan on a 5mm circular needle. Online i can't find anywhere how many stitches i can cast on. the needles is 29 in long. I am also just knitting, no purling, just the knit stitch. i want the blanket to be at least 48 inches to 54 inches wide. can someone please help me with the amount of stitches to cast on? thanks I also knit kind of tightly too, if that matters
When I am knitting purl stitches but they keep looking like garter stitches, why? I just learned to knit and I am trying to practice my pearl stitches but it keeps turning out looking like garter. I checked with several videos and online tutorials and I am knitting it correctly so I don't know why it's turning out looking so wrong. For several rows I can see the purling but then the garter stitch jumps in, even though I keep knitting purl. Does anyone know why this would be?

How many stitches do I cast on for a knitting stitch pattern? Say a pattern says to cast on a multiple of 2 stitches + 3 (it would be 5), but say you want double or triple the pattern size, how would you do that? Every time I try, I always seem to have one or two stitches more or less then I need and the pattern always winds up looking wrong. Can anyone tell me how to do this in a simple, non-confusing way?
What do you do with the tail after casting on your stitches (Knitting)? What do you do with that dangly bit of string thats left over after you cast on your stitches. I dont know anyone else who knits, and I taught myself how out of a book, but it doesnt say anythign about what to do with that damn piece of string thats left over. I know the knitting stitches, but what comes next? I'm learning how to knit (self-taught), and I understand the basics. I know how to cast on, do a knit stitch, and a purl stitch. What I don't understand is this: How do I keep going? How do I start a second row of stitches that connect to the first? I've read books, I've watched videos, I've read articles, but they only have taught me what I already know. Can someone PLEASE help me?
What are the best knitting or crochet stitches for unusual yarns? I bought a bulky (works on size 10.5 American needle) black boucle yarn with a bit of white and a thread of mylar for sparkle. What is the best knitting or crochet stitch to show off the yarn? And I have a 1/2 inch wide multicolor ribbon yarn. How do I show off the yarn/colors? Long stitches seem to be my only choice, so far. Are there others?
I gradually get more stitches when i'm knitting? I will make my slipknot then add 14 little cast on stitches to equal 15 stitches all together. I will then start to do my knit stitches and next thing i know i have like 18 stitches instead of 15. Why does this keep happening?
I need advice on how my stitches look while knitting cables. Can you help me? I'm knitting in the round on bamboo circulars (size 8 US) and the pattern is K6, P4 for 220 stitches, and when I switch to Purl from my K6, my stitches are really large (down along the left sides of my cables) when I get to that part, I try to only knit with the tips of my needles so the loops will be smaller but it doesn't seem to work. Can someone give me advice? thanks!
Does anyone have trouble with stitches not sliding on Bates knitting needle? I am using size 15 cables, using two strands of baby yarn. I am not knitting tightly, but the stitches don't slide well at all. I am fighting the work all the way! These are size 15 Silvalume needles. I have since bought some bamboo ones and they are so much better. Just wondered if I could use the silvalume with other kinds of yarn with better success.
How to undo stitches in Knitting? If i just knitted a stitch, and I wanted to get it back on my left needle to start over, how would i do it? How would i do it if i purled it? Also, if I wanted to go back a bunch of rows, how would I do that? Could you supply a video? Thank you!

How do I manage to keep making and losing stitches when I'm knitting? I just learned to knit from my grandma and I'm working on a scarf for a friend. However, I think it's kind of funny that I keep managing to adjust the number of stitches. I started off with 24, and have fluctuated from 22 to now 32. How come this happens? What am I doing wrong? I'm not too concerned seeing as this is my first knitting experience, I'm just curious.
Are there any other easy knitting stitches for a different design? :)? I have been knitting and pearling as my original pattern for a long while. Are there any other easy kniting stitch patterns so I can have different designs? Thx :) I need it to be easy so i am able to follow the steps correctly. :) I want to be able to make a scarf but with different patterns.
Problem with my knitting and stitches? So I just bought needles and thread tonight to try knitting. For some reason, after casting 12 stitches my short piece of string is at the top and the thread connecting to my big ball of yarn is at the bottom. I think the string connected to my ball of yarn is supposed to be at the top too but I'm not sure how to get it up there since I'm left handed. Every time I try to make a new stitch my stitches come out and then I have to redo them. If anyone could help me that would be great!
What are the first stitches in knitting a scarf? I know how to do the rest of it, but I just forget how to start off the scarf. Isn't it a slipknot or something? And if you know any websites with diagrams or anything, that would be helpful!
HOW DO YOU CAST ON STITCHES IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR KNITTING? I got this answer : You knit to where you want to cast on the stitches. Insert your right hand needle into the stitch on the needle and pull in a loop. Place that loop back on the needle. Keep doing that until you have the amount of extra stitches you need. Then knit the rest of the stitches on the row. On the next row just knit as usual. But i don't get how to make a loop? Plz help!
Why am I adding stitches to my knitting?? I'm following instructions on how to make something. It said to start with 15 stitches and alternate between the knit and pearl stitch until you get 3 inches of it. So far I have 1 and a half inches, and I just noticed that my stitches have gone up to 24!! Why is this happening?? And how can I eliminate 9 stitches without having a huge hole in my knitting?? Thanks! Thanks!!!!
(Knitting) How do I get rid of extra stitches? I just started knitting a scarf (I read a book at the library). I've gotten eight strings into the scarf and I've noticed 5 extra stitches have tagged along from somewhere. How do I get rid of the extra stitches without ruining the pattern?

How do you convert a knit stitch for knitting in the round? I just bought a knit stitch reference book, and I'd like to use some of the stitches for mittens and socks. How do you convert a regular knit stitch pattern for knitting in the round? Do you only work right-side rows? Thanks. Okay, I'll give an example. Maybe I wasn't clear. For example, on a flat piece of work, you would work stockinette st by knitting every stitch on the right side and purling every stitch on the wrong side. On circular needles or dpn's, for stockinette st, you knit every round. So I'm wondering how you would convert a more difficult pattern stitch to work for circular needles or dpn's.
Knitting - Transfer stitches to new needles? I broke the tip of the circular needles I was using and had to buy new needles. How do I transfer the stitches from the old needle to the new needle so that I can pick up the project exactly where I left off? Do I slip them knitwise, purlwise, or what? Thanks!
How can I make my knit stitches at the end/beginning of a row tighter? I have been knitting for a couple of years, but can't seem to get my stitches at the end and/or beginning of rows as tight and even as the rest of the work. The loop is always so huge. It seems to even out as the work is stretched from weight and such, but I've seen many knitters pieces as they go and all of their edges are so tight and beautiful.
how do you join stitches in knitting? how do you join in knitting? like with double pointed needles i think you do the top stitch and get it down to the bottom (i think). i dont really know help! oh and how do you knit 2 stitches as 1????? tnx
How do you knit stitches together WITHOUT decreasing? On my knitting pattern it says to "knit 2 together" and then continue on, but when I did this the knitting reduced to almost nothing...I think I have to create stitches, but when do I do that? After knitting stitches together? Before? The knitting pattern in question: after the initial purl row: Knit, slip 1, k2tog, psso, knit, slip1 k2tog psso, knit until end of row. next row is entirely knit stitch.
Knitting - How do I 'slip stitches on to a thread'? I'm a fairly new knitter and have come across something in the pattern that says 'slip stitches on to a thread'. It's the body of a knitted bear and the next step in the pattern says to draw up and secure. I have no idea what this means. Can anyone help??
Knitting and crocheting stitches and such? I have been trying to learn to knit sice x-mas 05 and have been pretty unsucessful. Does anyone know any books, websites or anything that would help me? I would love anything you can bring up to me. Then, I've been crocheting since maybe 3rd-4th grade, but i haven't gone more advance then a scarf. I don't know any other stitch other then the casting on stitch and that's it. I would love to get a lottle more creative, and go more advance but I haven't found anything. Any books, websites, your own story anything? Thank so much for any answers!
knitting a blanket - k53, p53 - loose stitches when changing k to p.? There is a large space forming btwn the k and p stitches due to a looseness when I change from knit to purl all the way up the blanket as I'm knitting. I have tried to knit and purl the last two knit stitches and first two purl stitches tightly but it doesn't seem to work. How do I prevent and or fix? Thanks!
Ugly stitches when knitting a striped scarf- Beginner? Hi! I am a beginner knitter. I am using simply a knit stitch over and over, and changing colors every 5 inches or so. However, I am getting some ugly stitches of the old color into the new color on the wrong side. Here is a picture to illustrate. Is it supposed to do this, or am I changing my colors wrong? http://i37.tinypic.com/2niz9ja.jpg
Knitting keep gaining stitches.? Just started Knitting a few days ago. I'm teaching myself, with the help of the Internet. So far I have mastered casting on and the knit stitch. My problem right now is, I keep gaining stitches and don't know why this keeps happening. I start by casting on 25 stitches and after two or three rows I have 26 and it keeps growing from there. What am I doing wrong?
Knitting stitches? New to knitting? I'm very knew to knitting. I just make pearl stitches into scarfs..lol. I'm reading to try different stitches. I don't know names but can anyone suggest ones? I'll then look on YouTube to learn how to do it. Or if you have a site I can go to, that would be great too! Thanks
KNITTING Q: How do I convert sock pattern stitches to regular back & forth knitting? I know this may seem like an obvious question, but I've never tried it before. Do I just rewrite every OTHER row totally backwards & substitute K for P and vice-versa? I have seen some really nice looking pattern sts on the legs of sox that I would like to use on a scarf I plan to make. Thanks for all your help - I asked this on Ravelry, but no one cared to answer.
What is the best knitting stitch for a purse strap? I want to knit a strap for a bag that I knit. I tried seed, garter and stockinette stitch, but it stretches so much, way beyond the length I want it. Is there a better stitch to use? Or is there a way to knit it so it's less stretchy? Should I just be knitting it to be the size I want once it has stretched? I'm just worried it'll keep stretching the more I use it.
how do i turn my work after the first row knit stitches? JUST LEARNED last night to cast on and knit first row. can't figure out how to start the knit stitch after turning the needle to the oppisite hand. please don't tell me to switch hands and just leave it at thart, i tried that for four hours last night! once i get it to the opposite hand, excactly how do i start the stitch for the second row. i know not to 'turn the stitches', but how do you avoid that when switching hands? help im going bananas here!!!!
What is the warmest knitting stitch pattern? I am going to knit a scarf and hat and would like to know what is the warmest stitch pattern? Also, what is the warmest material that's not made of animal products (wool or whatever). Thank you.
How to fix dropped knitting stitches??? Please forgive me, I am brand new at knitting. I literally opened the book yesterday and just started practicing with the knitting stitch. I have done it at least 20 times and then accidentally pull my needle out of the stitches! So I start over again. This time I was doing really well and almost finished my second row of stitches when I pulled the needle out of the last two stitches on the right (I am right handed) that were about to be transferred onto the left needle. My book says you can correct dropped stitches with a crochet hook which I don't have. I want to keep going.. is there another way to fix this? There is just a little knotted looking stitch hanging off the end of my knit pattern. What to do???? I know I can get a crochet hook but I just want to complete this first project now before going any further. Is there not another way to fix this mistake????
I am in desperate need on this knitting pattern for increasing stitches!? Okay, I'm doing this purse: http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=98&d_id=54&lang=en you start out with casting 88 and you have to do the garter stitch for 8 rows for the bottom for sewing the seam together, then you have to increase 132 evenly =220 stitches. Under the knitting help link on the page for this pattern, someone gives a little explanation of this: '':increase in front and back of first stitch, make one stitch, knit front and back of next 2 stitches, make one, knit front and back of next 2.......till last 3 stitches knit front and back, make 1, knit front and back, make one, knit front and back........ it cames up with 220 stitches in total...... '' I just don't understand this at all. I know that for an increase you wrap your needle once before you do your knit stitch but this just doen't make sense to me. :( I really appreciate it if anyone has the time to help me!
What are these decorative knitting stitches called? I've been looking for the term(s) of these decorative knitting stitches that you do after your knitting is done. I know you can do this with ribbon as ribbon embroidery but I want to do this type of work with yarn on finished wool gnomes I have knitted. Here is a link to show what I mean and what kinds of things I want to do: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_13&listing_id=17484522 I know there is the lazy daisy, running stitch, etc. but what are these called so I can google them and find instructions for how to do it. Does this make sense? Thanks!
What is the multiple of this knitting stitch pattern? yo, k2tog Is it 3? and this one: slip 1, knit2, pass slip stitch over knit stitch, k1 Oops! that should be slip 1, knit 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch yo, k2tog doesn't work if I cast on 8 stitches. But it does if I cast on 9.
Knitting: how do you count cast off stitches? I cast off by knitting 2 st onto the right needle, then slipping the first st over the last st and off the needle. Then, knit another st so that there are again 2 st on the right needle, and repeat. Now, does this count as one stitch (the one that I slipped) or two (because I knitted two)? I can't seem to get the stitch count right for my pattern
A question about knitting a throw blanket? How many stitches? I have a question about knitting a throw blanket... I will be using Lion Brand "Wool ease, thick and quick yarn" and size 10 knitting needles. How many stiches should I cast on to make an average size throw blanket? (Big enough for a guy to snuggle with on the couch)
Has anyone tried this knitting stitch? Can it be used as lace in clothing? I'm going to be making a black knee lenth skirt, plain, and A-line. I wanted to knit the Veil Stitch and have it be an overlay, like lace, on the skirt. Can this be done or will it look weird? The yarn I'm using is fairly soft and when knit with 4gauge needles there are 6 stitches per inch. Is this too thick?
KNITTING: altering cast on stitches to achieve gauge? I am knitting a tank top for my niece with Berocco Cotton Tots yarn, which is not what is used in the pattern. I used size 6 needles and got a gauge of too few stitches per inch than what is required. I only have size 5 in circs and the pattern doesn't require circs so I don't want to switch needles. In lieu of changing needles or yarn, is there a way to increase/decrease the number of cast on stitches for the pattern so that it would work out? I know this is a backwards approach but I am not sure if I should add more cast on or omit some. The pattern has a gauge of 20 sts per 4 inches, and I am getting 4 sts per inch, so...too few. THANKS for any help!
How to increase a stitch when knitting? i have a knitting pattern for a monkey and it tells me to cast on 10 stitches then increase every stitch by one. How on earth do i do this?! Please, anything will help, websites or your own instructions... thanls! Cookie Monster xx erm...what do you guys mean by knitting into the same stitch again because i tried but it turned out like a cross and tis really hard. i don't know if i'm knitting into the right bit...
Does anyone know of a good knitting website? I just learned how to knit from a website knittinghelp.com which is great, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other ones, that have free easy to understand videos. I've learned to knit stitch and pearl stitch....but I still don't know how to do anything else.
What is an edge stitch in knitting, and how do I increase stitches? I asked a question a few days ago about a pattern and the best answerer replied "...knit into the front and the back legs of the next stitch, work 12 more stitches in pattern, knit into the next stitch front and back (this is the simplest increase), and then work the next 12 stitches and knit front and back into the last stitch. You should now have 42 stitches." Now, does the edge stitch not count when casting on? I've always noticed that when turning my work after casting on, the first knit stitch does not want to transfer over. Also, what does "knit into the next stitch front and back" mean? Help! Thanks! I taught myself to knit, I have no grandparents and no one I know knits, nor do their grandmothers.
I need knitting help, im missing stitches with a pattern, can anyone tell me what im doing wrong!!!!!!? I have to knit this pattern in the round with only three needles. The 1st round and all odd rounds are in purl but i have trouble with the 2nd round and the rest of the even number of rounds. the pattern looks like this.... Round 1 and all odd rounds: Purl Round 2: K25, k2tog, k8, SSK, k25 Round 4: K24, k2tog, k8, SSK, k24 Round 6: K23, k2tog, k8, SSK, k23 Round 8: K22, k2tog, k8, SSK, k22 Round 10: K21, [k2tog] 3 times, [SSK] 3 times, k21 Round 12: K18, [k2tog] 3 times, [SSK] 3 times, k18 Round 14: K15, [k2tog] 3 times, [SSK] 3 times, k15 Round 15: Purl On round 2 when I follow the instructions I end up having to pick up two extra stitches from one of the purl rounds to complete the 25 knit stitches from the previous round. and then it happens on round number 4 and so on. What am I doing wrong or is the pattern just written wrong. PLEASE HELP ITS DRIVING ME NUTS NO FIGURING IT OUT!!!!!! By the way i meant each of the two needles have 31 stitches and i use the third one to knit and purl. Also this is the 2nd part of a baby slipper.
