Is it necessary to follow the recommended knitting needle size on yarn? I brought some knitting yarn and it suggests that I use a size 13 (9mm) knitting needles. I am knitting a hat. Do I have to follow this recommendation? If I used a size 7 would this not work? Why? Thanks so much, I am just trying to avoid buying a new needle size whenever I start a new project!
With 2 skeins of self-striping knitting yarn (for socks) how do I find the place to start? I've been using self-striping knitting yarn for socks for years. I knit both socks at the same time so that the stripes will match up. This time I have not been able to find out where on the skein the colors repeat the same on both skeins. I've done this a million times and this is the first time I haven't been able to get the skeins to a place where the colors match. HELP!

Knitting - how to hold yarn double from one skein? I've knitted with yarn held double before - easy. For the project I'm starting now, I need to hold the yarn double again. However, one skein provided the necessary total yardade, and I didn't want to buy two skeins for no reason. Is there a convenient way to wind/hold the yarn so I can use both ends of one skein at the same time? It's in a hank right now. I don't want to buy another if I don't need to. Thanks!
What is the best way to hold the yarn in your left hand when knitting? I tried the technique used from knittinghelp.com, which is wrapping the yarn around your pinky and index finger. I found this way awkward and my pinky doesn't have the strength to keep the yarn tight. I just learned to knit a couple of weeks ago and haven't been wrapping the yarn around my fingers at all, I just wrap the loose yarn around the knitting needle to make a stitch and pull to tighten.

Looking for large quantities of unwanted knitting yarn, 80 miles radius of Ventura area.? I am a machine knitter who is looking for cheap, unwanted, large quantities of yarn to purchase. I'm trying to work a pattern for a scarf that changes colors every two rows, and the beginning of the pattern says, "Because each colour stripe is only two rows the yarn can be carried up the sides without being cut." (Here's a link to it, if that helps, http://www.ysolda.me.uk/wordpress/index.php/skull-illusion-knit-scarf/ )
