Knitting: Casting on, help me please? I'm learning to knit, and I need a bit of help. My Aunt sent me home with a few rows of a dishcloth done, and I do believe I have messed it up beyond repair. I'm not going to see her for a few days and would really like to know how to cast on, and keep knitting. I went on YouTube and searched casting on, is there a specific technique that I should be using to make a dishcloth? Thanks.
I'm having some problems with knitting casting on.? Ok, so I have been knitting since November 2008, and have been doing pretty well. When I began knitting I had trouble casting on, and my then-friend would show me how to do it for a few, then just do it for me. (For the 2 projects I've completed.) I've been wanting to start a new project because I finally had the money to get some new yarn and so I did, along with the book Stitch'n Bi-ch. So here's my problem: I can make the slip know and put it on the needle. Then I followed the directions in the book, and I thought I was doing it right, but now i'm not so sure. The problem is that once I have all my stitches cast on I go to knit the next row and I have 2 strands (1 from the tail, one from the ball) about an inch long between my needles, and it increases every time I put a new stitch onto the right needle. (I'm right handed.) It increases about an inch every time I take of a stitch so by the time I get to the last stitch on the row I have a really big loop of yarn between the last 2 stitches. Any idea of what I am doing wrong? I tried youtube too, but the same thing happens every time, and I've tried like 6 or 7 times....
Knitting ~ casting on? i'm making these bunny booties http://aww.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=785155 and i'm stuck on the part where you need to cast on. Do i cast on so the stitches are on the needle with no work on it or cast on to the needle with the work on it and knit through the whole row.
Knitting: Casting on? If I want to make a blanket/afghan that's approximately 50" x 60" (or anywhere close to that, really), about how many stitches should cast on with? If I want to knit an afghan/blanket that's approximately 50" by 60" (or anything close to that really), how many stitches should I cast on? I'm using size 10 1/2 needles, the wool is 4 ply, and the stitches are moderately tight.
Can anyone help me with casting on - knitting? So I'm sitting with wool and knitting needles infront of me and I know how to knit and cast of I just don't know how to cast on if anyone could offer a simple easy technique to doing it that would be great thanks:)

Knitting Question-Casting On? Hi! I just bought myself a pair of knitting needles, a crochet hook, and two balls of yarn. My needle size is size 8 US, 5.0 mm, my crochet hook size is H-8 US, 5 mm. I checked the label on my ball of yarn, and the sizes for both crochet hook and needles are correct. I am a beginning knitter. (I am 13). I checked out a book from my library on knitting. The book shows 10 steps, from making the basic slip knot loop to casting on one stitch. I am on step 8, 9, and. (Confused in between). The direction for directions 8 and 9 say, "Using the tip of your right hand needle, pull the yarn through the slipknot and put the new loop onto the needle into your left hand." Step 10 says, "To cast on the rest of your stitches, put your empty needle between the last two loops on the left hand needle instead of in the loop, as you did with the first stitch. Do not pull the new stitches too tightly. You should be able to slide them up and down your needle easily etc. I am really confused. My book is called "Kids Knit".
Knitting: after casting on? I am trying to learn how to knit and I have done the casting on on the left needle but I don't know what to do next? How do you start a new line? Any suggestions of good websites?
Help with knitting pattern- casting off sleeve holes? My pattern says to cast off every other row at each side, 3 stitches, then 2 and then 1 but when I cast off the last 3 stitches from the row I am left with the last stitch on the needle with my ball of wool at the end, so I can't get on to the next row!! Have I done this wrong and if so, how do I undo it and how do I do it correctly? I have spent ages knitting this and if I have made an irreversible mistake right at the end I will be most upset! Thanks X

Learning to Knit - Casting-on Issue? Okay, So my baby is due in September and I've taken up knitting to make him a blanket. I practiced for a few weeks and just recently felt comfortable enough to get the circular needles required by the pattern and check my gauge. I started the blanket this morning. I'm to cast-on 110 stitches and then garter stitch 6 rows for the garter stitch border. ( I know, after looking at the end of the pattern, that the cast-on stitches count as the first row - at least I think that's why I stitch 5 rows at the end instead of 6). I've had to rip out once already though, because after I knitted the first row after casting-on, I checked stitches, thinking I'd cast-on correctly having counted carefully, only to find I had 112 stitches - not 110. I ripped out and re-cast-on, very carefully counting my stitches, including the first slip knot stitch. AGAIN, I got 112 stitches when I counted! AHHH! I pulled out two, but did I miss count? Did I actually somehow cast-on two whole stitches twice? Is this a common mistake that takes some trick to avoid. I never had any issue casting on 14 stitches or 20 stitches when I was practicing and getting my gauge right, so why the problem with 110? Sorry if it seems strange to freak out about this, but I have a math degree. I can count. I don't know how I screwed up the exact same way twice. I even triple counted each time. Any advise from long time knitters?
What do you do with the tail after casting on your stitches (Knitting)? What do you do with that dangly bit of string thats left over after you cast on your stitches. I dont know anyone else who knits, and I taught myself how out of a book, but it doesnt say anythign about what to do with that damn piece of string thats left over. Also, if anyone could give me some good ideas for tassels on the end.
Knitting my first mitten and I'm stuck on the thumb. Help anyone? I'm knitting my first mitten, and I've gotten the ribbing done, and I've finished with the thumb gusset. The next instructions are for the thumb (this is the left-hand mitten, by the way). The pattern (it's a flat pattern) says: With main color K 25, turn Cast on 1 stitch then purl, cast on stitch plus next 13 stitches, turn Cast on 1 stitch then knit cast on stitch plus next 14 stitches, turn purl on these 15 stitches Stocking stitch 12 rows K1, (k2 tog) repeat to end Put thread through these stitches and pull tight. Sew up thumb seam. Does this mean that I'm knitting 25 stitches into what I have, then casting on one stitch, one purl, and then casting on an additional 13 stitches? What does the turn mean? I have no idea what I'm doing anymore. Your help is greatly appreciated! http://www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/9C07936D-6349-4EB5-AD30-257C14219730/0/3972athmittens.pdf The pattern can be found above, if it would help clarify to anyone willing to help.
Knitting Question-Help? I'm knitting a small project: a cell phone cozy. Instructions: Cast on 22 stitches(I used knitted cast on) Row 1(RS): P2. *Sl1. K2. psso. P2; repeat from * to end of row. Row 2: K2. *P1. yrn. P1. K2; repeat from * to end of row. Row 3: P2. *K3. P2; repeat from * to end of row. Row 4: K2. *P3. K2; repeat from * to end of row. These 4 rows form pattern. Continue in pattern until work beginning measures 11 inches. ending with WS facing for next row. Below the main instructions are "Make Buttonhole"(I guess it's optional). I would like to make a buttonhole. This is the pattern(my question fallows...). Buttonhole Row 1(RS): Work in pattern for the first 10 stitches. Bind off 2 stiches. Work in pattern to end of row. Next Row: Work row 4 of pattern, casting on 2 stitches over the bound off stitches in the previous row. Work in pattern to end of row. Next row:(P2tog. Sl1. K2. psso.) two times. P2tog. (Sl1. K2. psso. P2tog.) two times. There will be 17 remaining. Knit 2 rows. Bind off all stiches knitwise on WS. Fold bottom edge up to where first bind off is and sew seams. Sew on button. Voila! I apologize for the long wait. I want to make a buttonhole for my cozy...On row 1 of making the buttonhole, it says to work in pattern for the first 10 stitches...Does it mean stitches you've transfered onto the right needle or just knitted, whether you bind off or slip any? Also, another question: Still on row 1 of making the buttonhole, it says to work in pattern to end of row...Were do you start off from? Do you Sl1 because you last did a purl stitch and it fallows the pattern? I would really appreciate some help. Thank you, everyone, for your time!
Loom knitting, cast on question? I have tried many different cast on methods but I can never get the start to look as tight and put together as the bind off end. Anyone out there have a solution?
Help with casting on in knitting? I just started knitting and I have trouble casting on. KNITTING cast on choices - website? There are so many different ways to cast-on. I want to know which cast-on is good for which project. The patterns I read never say which cast-on to use. I assume that each cast-on method has their pros/cons. Does anyone know of a good website that explains the pros/cons of each cast-on method and what stitch or project they are best suited for?? I already looked at knittinghelp.com but they didn't explain fully (although they are a fantastic website).
does any one know how to cast on knitting? I have never knitting before and I need some really simple instructions on how to cast on or a good website that shows you how but doesnt have videos as my comp cant handle them. Thanks!
How do you cast off knitting? I just learned how to knit and it's time to cast off. I want to do it correctly so that it doesn't unravel. I looked it up on youtube and it shows me how to do most of it, except it doesn't show me what to do with the rest of the tail. It said something about weaving it, but I don't know how. Could you help me?
Knitting help!!??!!??!!???!!!???!!?!??!!? The base of this purse is crocheted. It allows for a truly round base. Even if you have never crocheted before, it is very simple to crochet this part so do give it a try. The handle is worked in Tunisian crochet which is quite a different technique than regular crochet. If you are not familiar with this, there are several options. You could crochet a strap by chaining 40 or so stitches and then working several rows of single crochet. Or if you prefer to knit, cast on about 50 sts and work several rows of garter stitch. Free knitting classes in the NYC area? I know the basics such as casting on, knitting and purling (I'm a beginner) But I want to make much more than just scarves and simple hats. Does anyone know a place in the NYC area that offers knitting classes? Please and thank you!
what is the best cast on to use with a lengthwise knitted scarf? knitting cast ons and bind offs that match for different uses I don't care to use the long-tail, with one length of yarn or two (to avoid running out of yarn). It doesn't have an edge I like, esp. with a garter-stitched lengthwise scarf, nor does it have the give.
could somebody please help me with a small section of a knitting pattern? I am attempting to knit my first jacket...I'm not entirely confident with it yet but I am following through with the pattern. I was just reading ahead and the pattern states this: Work until 36 sts. Inc for collar ROW 1: knit ROW 2: Cast on 2 sts, purl to end (38). I am not sure what is meant by casting on...does this mean to increase stitches or to actually cast them on? I would really appreciate any help! Thank you soo much!
knitting pattern help, casting on sts onto sts? Im knitting a doll from this book and im totally stuck on this one row here's what it says : Row 45: k7, put next 12 sts (for 1st arm) on a stitch holder, cast 8 sts onto 1st 7sts, k13, put next 12 sts (for second arm) on a stitch holder, cast on 8 sts to the middle 13 sts, k7. so the part im stuck on is ...(cast 8 sts onto 1st 7sts & cast on 8 sts to the middle 13 sts) how do i go about doing this row?

Why are my edges not straight in my knitting project? I am new to knitting, I can cast on and off and do the basic knit stitch. I am making a blanket and my edges aren't super straight like my bottom is. Is it supposed to be that way? Or am I doing something horribly wrong? Also, if ya'll have any other tips for teaching myself to knit, I would love to hear them. Thanks! How do I add a edge at the end? Sorry, I am very new to knitting
KNITTING: altering cast on stitches to achieve gauge? I am knitting a tank top for my niece with Berocco Cotton Tots yarn, which is not what is used in the pattern. I used size 6 needles and got a gauge of too few stitches per inch than what is required. I only have size 5 in circs and the pattern doesn't require circs so I don't want to switch needles. In lieu of changing needles or yarn, is there a way to increase/decrease the number of cast on stitches for the pattern so that it would work out? I know this is a backwards approach but I am not sure if I should add more cast on or omit some. The pattern has a gauge of 20 sts per 4 inches, and I am getting 4 sts per inch, so...too few. THANKS for any help!

Can anyone help me with learning the specific terms for knitting? I'm teaching myself to knit. I've learned casting on, the knit stitch, and the purl stitch. What is suppose to happen after you cast-on when knitting? I just picked up the knitting needles yesterday, and I am so confused! When I follow what the book/video says, I just end up transferring all the stitches from one needle to the other! Is this suppose to happen?? Please help!!!
Any tips for casting on in knitting? I am an absolute beginning knitter, and just yesterday learned how to make the stitch to cast on. I think I've got it down now, although I haven't learned how to do anything else yet! I'm trying to teach myself a stitch now, but I've found that my cast-on stitches are too tight. How do I make them looser? No matter what I try, I always seem to get them too tight. My major problem with knitting so far is controlling the tension of the yarn. Also, any other tips for beginning would be great. Thanks! I use the thumb method, the only one I've learned so far.
Can Anyone Help me With Knitting? I've just starting knitting, and can cast on fine, but when i go to do the knit stitch it becomes too tight and I can't move the needles. Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong and how to fix it?
When knitting, how do I cast on existing work? What I mean is, when I am working on a piece and the pattern wants me to knit two together several times and then cast on 10 stitches for the armhole, how do I do this? I know how to cast on but I don't know how to cast on more stitches in the middle of my knitting. Do I just do a backwards loop ten on my right needle times? Please help! Thanks. I've tried looking on several knitting help sites without any luck.
How do you cast on when you are knitting a sweater? I am knitting a sweater for the first time. I am making the back and when it's time to make the sleeve, it says to cast on stiches. How do you cast on for the sleeves if you have already knit 13'' for the back?
What Is The Easiest Way To Cast / Bind Off In Knitting? I'm knitting a baby blanket, and it's my first time ever knitting with needles. I've looked at various sites and books on how to cast off and they look really confusing. Please can someone explain how to cast off easily? Thanks! x Sakura x ^_^ Thanks guys - but what do you mean by "pass over?" Sorry I'm such a beginner! Thanks x
Knitting question: joining yarn and casting on? I'm knitting a baby jumper that has a back opening at the neck with an underlap. I've divided the back and followed the pattern to the shoulder shaping. I'm now up to the part that takes you back to the division row and says: "Join yarn to remaining stitches, cast on 4 sts for underlap, K4, pattern to end". I have no idea how to 'join yarn' and then cast on when the existing stitches are on the left hand needle. Can anyone give me the "idiot's guide" to how I can do this? How do I join the yarn ... and to what?? Thanks! Tried your suggestion last night Peggie. It worked ... though I found it a bit hard to pull the wool through each subsequent loop I created. So I did as suggested for the first loop and then cast on the remaining stitches in my usual way. That seemed to do it! Thanks! :)

Knitting: how do you count cast off stitches? I cast off by knitting 2 st onto the right needle, then slipping the first st over the last st and off the needle. Then, knit another st so that there are again 2 st on the right needle, and repeat. Now, does this count as one stitch (the one that I slipped) or two (because I knitted two)? I can't seem to get the stitch count right for my pattern

Help with basic knitting? I just learned to knit and am trying to knit a very basic scarf. I've started over so many times, my scarf is okay in the middle, but is just two giant knots on either end, that just seem to get bigger as i knit. Also, the stitches seem to be so tight on the needle that i can't turn the scarf to make it straight, no matter how loosely i try to knit or cast on. What am i doing wrong? Any tips would be greatly appreciated :) on one of my scarves, i noticed i had gone from 20 to 27 stitches. then i started over and since then i've counted them several times to make sure i'm not adding any
Can anyone help with knitting instructions? Just started afghan "Celtic Tradition" from "Big Needle Knit Afghans" for a Christmas gift. I don't know if I'm dumb, or pattern is wrong, but it's not working for me. Cast on 165 sts. Knit 7 rows in garter. Pattern - Knit 1st & last 7 sts in garter. Rows 1, 3, & 5, knit. Rows 2 & 4: P3, k2, *p5, k2, rep from * across, end last rep p3. (When I get there after last p5, k2, I have 13 stitches or 6 plus my 7 stitch garter border.) Rows 6 & 8 (K2, sl 1) twice, *k3, sl 1, k2, sl 1, rep from * across, end last rep k2. (I believe I'd need 6 stitches to end with k2, but there are only 5 + 7 on needle.) Row 7 works out - P2, sl 1, k2, sl 1, *p3, sl 1, k2, sl 1, rep from * across, end last rep p2. Row 9: K2, C4, *k3, c4, rep from * across, end last rep k2. (There are 5 stitches + 7, not 2 + 7. Row 10 repeats row 2. Don't know if I'm reading this wrong, but I'm stuck, and I'm dreading pulling my work out. Can someone help?
Those with Experience: Knitting vs Crochet? Hello, I'm an experienced crocheter specializing in amigurumi. I tried to learn how to knit a few years back and could not understand it. To those of you that are able to do both, which do you find easier: knitting or crochet? Also, do you cast on knitting needles the way you would do so with a crochet hook? Also, do you lefty knitters have much difficulty?
How do I switch needles while knitting? I'm new to knitting. The guide I'm using to try and knit my first hat says to cast on stitches using 8mm circular needles. The next step says to switch to a smaller size needle. I've never run across this before and don't really understand what it wants me to do. Help!
Would cable cast-on be appropriate for knitting a baby hat? I've used cable cast-on before when making beanies and the edge looks a lot nicer compared to regular cast-on. However, I know that cable cast-on is very rigid, so I'm wondering whether I should just stick to regular cast-on to avoid ribbing that's too tight. Any opinions?
Casting on/needles to small? My friend lent me some needles and wool so that I could learn to knit. I tried casting on (with the help of an online guide) but cannot for the life of me get it to work! I think I'm doing it correctly, but it ends up all twisted and bunched up by the third stitch. Could too small knitting needles be the problem? Or am I just an idiot who can't figure out how to cast on?
How do I knit a second row? I've just barely mastered casting on and knitting the first row. But how do you knit the second row? Where do you insert the needle? In the casted on stitch, in the first row stitch, or what?
Calling all knitters!! How do you do ribbing and purl stitch? I started knitting a couple of months ago and I can only do the basics, cast on, knit, bind of. But I'm really good at it. I want to make a hat, but I can't find any directions that show me how to do purl stitch or ribbing. Thanks ...~♥...♥~... It's ahrd for me to understand it when you just type it, it would be nice if you could direct me to a website I can go to that will visionly (can't spell) show me. ♥ thanksomuch ♥
Does the cast on count as the first row of knitting? I am learning to knit and trying to learn to count rows. If I cast on using the sling shot method does it count as my firs row of knit or does the knit start after that? Sometimes I think I like crochet better. (I've crochet for 30+ years, and I've been knitting 2 weeks!)
How can I stop my knitting curling? My knitting always curls at the edges, even when knitting garter stitch, and no matter what yarn I am using (whether wool, acrylic or another). I have tried casting on more loosely, but with no difference. I always block woollen pieces, which helps, but not with acrylic. Apart from crocheting the edges, which is good but not suitable for everything I make, is there another way to get my knitting to lie flat by changing the way I knit?
I am knitting an afghan on a 5mm circular needle, how many stitches should I cast on? Hi, I'm knitting an afghan on a 5mm circular needle. Online i can't find anywhere how many stitches i can cast on. the needles is 29 in long. I am also just knitting, no purling, just the knit stitch. i want the blanket to be at least 48 inches to 54 inches wide. can someone please help me with the amount of stitches to cast on? thanks I also knit kind of tightly too, if that matters
How to add a little something to knitting? I'm knitting a baby blanket in garter stitch on the diagonal (cast on 5 and work up to 160 stitches, decrease down to 5) with a stockinette border. It's really sweet but I want to add a little something to make it special. Any suggestion?
Is there a knitting bind off method that looks similar to the cable cast on? I've been trying many different ways to bind off, but they all are a little tight, and they have a "ridge" or hard edge. The cable cast on that I usually use has a much softer looking, stretchier edge. I'm wondering if there's a way to bind off that looks more like a cable cast on. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!
How long did it take you to catch on to knitting? I'm trying to learn how to knit. I want to make a Christmas present for someone by knitting it for them. I've got the continental cast-on down pat.....but after that....I just can't seem to get it to work, just yet. How long did it take you to perfect this? Was it tricky? Or was it pretty easy - and I'm just not lucky in knitting? =)

A question about knitting a throw blanket? How many stitches? I have a question about knitting a throw blanket... I will be using Lion Brand "Wool ease, thick and quick yarn" and size 10 knitting needles. How many stiches should I cast on to make an average size throw blanket? (Big enough for a guy to snuggle with on the couch)
